Each Wellington library owns books, magazines, CDs and DVDs, and has study tables and chairs for customers to use.

Most books can be borrowed for four weeks, but CDs, magazines and DVDs may be borrowed for one week.

You will need to join (more information on joining) and get your own library card. It is free for everyone who lives in Wellington City to join the library, including children.

You can use your library card to borrow from any of the library branches.
If you live outside of Wellington (for example Hutt City, Porirua, Paraparaumu) you can either join and borrow from your local libraries, or join Wellington. (more information on joining if you live outside Wellington city).

When you borrow an item, the librarian will give you a slip of paper. This has a list of the items you borrowed and when they are due back at the library. Return everything you borrowed to the library you got them from before closing time on the due date. Otherwise there will be charges to pay. (more information on library charges)

If you have charges on your library card that you would like to pay, you can either pay these at the library, or make an online payment with a credit card. More information is available about payment options on our payments page.

If you lose or damage a library book it is important to contact the library. There will be a charge to pay, and unpaid debts are sent to a debt collection company.

To Find Information

Library staff are available for help. You can ask for help to find a book, magazine, CD or DVD to borrow, or you can ask them for information. This help service is free.

The Library catalogue is a list of everything in the libraries to borrow. Catalogue search here Ask staff to show you how to use it.

If another customer has already borrowed what you would like, you can put your name on the waiting list. When they return it, the library will contact you to borrow. There is a $2 charge for adults. Ask a staff member how to reserve.

Sometimes the library will want to contact you - for example, to let you know a book you had reserved is ready to pick up. An automatic phone system may telephone. If you think the details are wrong it is important to contact the library (801-4040).

You can renew your items once for an extra loan period. Ask a staff member when you visit the library, or renew online when you check your library card at When your loan summary appears, check the boxes beside the items you want to extend and click the 'renew items' button - the screen will then show you the new due dates for the items you have renewed.

Loan periods vary depending on the type of item - check our Borrowing Page for more information about loan periods, or ask a librarian. Your items will not be able to be renewed if they have been reserved by another customer. If the item you are renewing has a rental fee (such as for adult DVDs), you will need pay another rental fee to keep the item for longer.

For more information about this service, ask at your local library.

Email notification

You can now request that your reserve and overdue notices are sent by email. All you need to do is complete the online form or ask at your local library.
