How do I...

How can I check my library card/account?

You can check your card at any time by visiting: Check Your Card and entering your card number (e.g. C123...) and your PIN.

On 6 November 2019 your login password changed to a PIN. This initially will have been set as the last 4 digits of the phone number we had on record for you at the time of this change — we recommend you then change it to a number known only to you more information about the login change.

Once logged in, you can select the headings to see your:

  • Loans: what you have out and when it is due back.
  • Reserves: what you have on reserve. 'Request pending' means the item is not available yet; 'Ready for pickup' means you can collect it. You can cancel a reserve by selecting the title, then clicking 'Cancel this reserve'.
  • Charges and fees: information on charges such as overdue and reserve charges.
  • Borrower status: if it says 'Restricted', you may have money owing or we may require some information from you. Please ask at your local library.

You can renew your items for a further issue period if there are no reserves on them.

How can I pay my account?

Payments can be made at any branch library by eftpos or credit card. Online payments using credit or debit cards can be made via wcl.govt.nz/payments. Credit card payments are also accepted by telephone, Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 5pm, by calling 801 4058 or 801 4055. See Returns and Overdues for more information.

Does it cost anything to borrow from the library?

Books, with the exception of the bestseller collection, are free to borrow. Some of our other collections e.g. DVDs, CDs, magazines etc have rental fees. For a full list of these, see our borrowing page.

Fees will apply for items returned after their due date. Borrowed items need to be returned on the day due during the issuing library's opening hours although there is a two day grace period - if the items are returned after this time, they will incur a charge. For a list of these, see Returns and Overdues.

How can I get technical support?

If you are having problems using our catalogues, online databases, eMedia or any other part of our website, please fill out our technical support form and we will provide support where we can. We may need to seek assistance from external suppliers for some services.

Does the library have internet / WiFi access?

Internet access on library PCs

We provide free access to the internet within all of our branches. Our Study PCs offer access to a range of New Zealand websites, as well as a huge number of websites we think are useful for information or research. Full Access PCs allow general internet use such as search engines, social media and email. You can login with your library card and PIN, or if you don't have a library card, you can obtain a guest ticket from the library staff.

Customer tablets

In some of our libraries, we provide iPad Mini tablets which can be borrowed for free for three weeks. These can be used in the library or taken home. They come pre-loaded with eLibrary apps, so that borrowers can become familiar with these online resources. They can also be used for general internet access at home or using the library WiFi . WiFi Access

Free WiFi is available at all our library branches - look for WellyWiFi in the list of networks that appear when WiFi is enabled on your device.

Note: The WiFi network available at Newtown Library is cbdfree, another public access network.

Can I type a document or edit a spreadsheet? What software is available?

Software available on the internet PCs includes: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Reader.

Printing is 20c per side of the page for A4 black and white - your first 10 printed sides are free of charge. Colour printing is $1.50c per A4 page.

A3 printing is also available for 40c per side of the page for black and white, or $3 per page for colour printing.

How do I suggest that the library buys a book/CD/DVD etc?

Anyone with a current library card can make a 'Suggestion to Buy'. You can do this by:

  • Filling in a Request Form (check the 'Suggestion to buy' option) OR
  • Filling out a Suggestion to Buy form at your local branch

For an Overdrive eBook, you recommend a title for purchase via theOverdrive website or using the Overdrive app.

What do I need to be able to download eBooks from Wellington City Libraries?

You need:

  • A Wellington City Libraries card
  • Internet access
  • A mobile device, a computer, or compatible eReader


Our eBooks are supplied by a service called OverDrive and can be found on our eLibrary page.

Can I get a reminder before my books are overdue?

Yes, you can get automatic e-mail reminders (3 days before the item due date), if we have your email in our system. If you would like to make sure you will receive our Courtesy Reminders please email us.

Can I talk to a Justice of the Peace (JP) in the library?

Yes, JP clinics run at set times at several of our branches — Kilbirnie, Miramar and Te Awe Libraries.

To see schedules for these visits, or to find out other locations and times a justice of the peace is available in your area of Wellington, please visit the Royal Federation of NZ Justices' Association website.

To find the JP clinic schedules for Kilbirnie, Miramar and Te Awe on the Royal Federation site, search for the suburb name (e.g. Kilbirnie, Wellington Central, Miramar), choose Service Desks and then Availability.
