Our Te Reo Kete hold books to enjoy with your whānau while you begin your te reo and tikanga Māori journey together. Find out more below!
What's inside?
Each kete consists of:
- 5 x books to help to you start learning te reo words and grammar
- 2 x books that introduce you to the concept of tikanga
- 3 x bilingual picture books
- 1 x kēmu/card game
- Information about the WCC app Mahau
- A tag attached to the bag handle which lists each book title in the kete
How does it work?
- Te Reo Kete are available on a first-come, first-served basis
- You may borrow one kete at a time for 6 weeks
- Kete can't be renewed or reserved
- The kete borrower is responsible for checking out and returning the entire kete, and is fully responsible for its return, as well as any replacement costs for damaged/lost kete items or a whole set
How much does it cost?
- Te Reo Kete are free to borrow
- $20 charge for a lost/damaged book
- $60 charge for a lost kete

Te Reo Kete are held in 5 branch libraries:
- Ngā Puna Wairoa (Newtown)
- Te Awe (CBD Brandon Street)
- Te Awa-a-Taia (Kilbirnie)
- Te Māhanga (Karori)
- Waitohi (Johnsonville)
Please note: The kete must be borrowed from and returned to the same library, and can't be reserved or moved to another library for pick-up.

Terms and Conditions
The terms and conditions, listed below, are to help customers understand Library procedures and their responsibilities when borrowing Te Reo Kete.
These terms and conditions are in addition to standard library membership conditions e.g. "I undertake to return all items borrowed from the library by the due date, and to pay all rental fees, loan extension fees, damages and replacement charges that are incurred".
Eligibility and responsibilities of Te Reo Kete customers
- All borrowers of Te Reo Kete are Wellington resident library members with current library cards.
- The borrower is responsible for the kete, which is issued on their library card. This person is responsible for checking out and returning the entire kete, and is fully responsible for its return, as well as any replacement costs for lost kete items or a damaged/lost kete set
- Kete will be issued by a Libraries staff member
- The kete must be returned to a library staff member, who will check them for missing copies and damage before returning it
Loan conditions
- Individual titles with the kete can't be issued; only the whole kete
- The lending period is 6 weeks, with no renewals
- There are no overdue fees, but if, 30 days after the due date, the kete has not been returned, it becomes "lost" and the borrower's card will be blocked, as with other library items.
- The fees for lost/damaged books will be:
- $20 charge for a lost/damaged book
- $60 charge for a lost kete
- Kete must be borrowed from and returned to the same library, and can't be reserved or moved to another library for pick-up
